The Swedish Organisation of Fair Trade Retailers
The Swedish Organisation of Fair Trade Retailers is a member organisation for retailers of Fair Trade products in Sweden. Currently the organisation has about 40 members located all over the country. Historically, the Fair Trade Retailers was a member organisation for World Shops only. However, as of 2011 the possibilities of becoming a member in the organisation has broadened.
The history of the Fair Trade Retailers
The annual meeting is the highest decision making body, which also elects the board. The national office is located in Gothenburg. Gothenburg is also where the first World Shop in Sweden, Alternativ Handel (Alternative Trade) was founded in 1969. In 1986 the Swedish Organisation of Fair Trade Retaliers was founded, however, at that time it was called U-SAM, U-landsgruppernas samarbetsförening (The Solidarity Groups’ Association). 11 years later, in 1997, the Fair Trade Retailers changed its name to Världsbutikerna för Rättvis Handel (Swedish World Shops' Association). And in 2011, the same year that the organisation celebrated 25 year, the organisation changed its name again, this time to the Swedish Organisation of Fair Trade Retailers.
